Extending a shed

by Dean

Hi John, I want to extend my 15 by 12 foot shed. I would take the 12' and make the shed 22'long. What are some good ideas on doing this 'small' project?

Cheers

Dean

Hi Dean,
Thanks for your question. Sorry for the delay in replying as I just got back from my holidays.

The first thing to do is to take a look at the roof of the shed. What is the roof structure? The easiest to extend would be if the roof is a series of individual trusses at say 16" centres. Looking at the existing roof will also give you an idea of timber sizes and how the members are connected.

If the roof is not the above form of construction then an alternative solution will be required depending on what you find.

The next thing is to look at the existing foundations and see how level the ground is in the area that you want to extend into.

It would be great if you could send in some photos and I will try to give you some more pointers.

All the best

John

EXTENDING A SHED
by: JOE P

i WANT TO DO THE SAME THING AND WAS CONCERNED ABOUT THE FOUNDATION. THE ORIGINAL SHED SITS ON 9 1FOOT DIAMETER, 3FOOT DEEP CONCRETE PILINGS. DO I HAVE TO USE CONCRETE PILINGS ON THE EXTENSION SO THAT THE TWO SECTIONS MOVE TOGETHER IN THE FREEZE/THAW CYCLE?

THANKS

How about a picture

If you were to upload a pic to John maybe he could share it with the rest of us and we could give you some really good building tips for the extension of your shed.

Thanks,
John

Split roof level
by: GreenBoy

I have to agree with Shedguy, unless you are planning on stripping the whole roof back on the existing shed so you can match it and board over the join with the new shed, you will get a visible join.

A neighbour of mine has done this and after only a short while it started looking a bloody mess.

(sorry for the swaering!)

Please keep us update on how you get on - i live vicariously through others shed building

Suggestion
by: Shedguy

Drop the new extension roof line down below the existing and flash shingles to the old building
This will save the the hassle of trying to match
existing rafters and roof lines
Good luck and have fun>
