The Gem Shed

by David Hingamp
(London)

The Gem Shed in its closed position

The Gem Shed in its closed position

The dry build structural solution (standard 100mm I beam steel profiles) were all assembled on site like a “meccano” in 1 week with very little disruption to the existing garden.

To reduce costs we decided to use standard internal bi-folding glazed partitions to enable a frameless finish to the outside of the building.

The 12mm toughened glass and acid etched panels glide open by just a light push and stack up on each side of the building. In the open position, the corner steel post is the only apparent structure; the seamless floors blend in and the shed becomes an open space and fully integrated to the existing garden. In its closed position, the glazing reflects the garden.

At night, the shed becomes a soft glowing feature and contributes to the whole garden experience.

architect's response

I designed and built this garden room for around £40K.
The frameless glass doors make this room very discreet and totally transparent / reflective at different time of the day.
Costs from highest to lowest:
both side glazed bi-folding elevations
steelworks
automated ventilation skylight (for barbecue)
water proof membrane
sprayed glass back panels
but let's not forget: trenches, ductings for all services back to main house were very costly (macerating pump etc...)
Good luck!

I’ll understand if you are not able or willing to share this but… May I ask how much this cost and what were the items that had the biggest impact on the budget? Thank you.

this is a nice product that is built, but it is already designed, etc... i appreciate the minimal construction disturbance with the use of efficient materials. very sleek!
