I use the world wide web, also known as www for my primary marketing and I use business cards and self made flyers. Word of mouth and friends, family and co-workers of my customers are also very important to me.

I of course have the website and my key words which are SHEDS and WNY. There are several others too. I do on-line blogging and posting free-ads to listings such as Craigslist. Basically type in your key words and see where they lead you and then follow up and use those sites. I know what works best for me.

My dad did a lot of carpentry work and I always helped. I also worked for several companies and I personally think that bigger is not always better. We offer a personalized touch to the project. Site checks right through completion.

To me being as small as I am and not keeping a lot of overhead is the way to go. I think people are looking for deals-savings-discounts and that takes me back to the marketing.

My teachers in school, only 20 years ago. "find a product you can make and some day you can sell it through the glorified phone system".

Well I think I figured it out, got the product all labelled and priced right out on the website. Potential customers look and already know what their shed will cost them when they contact me. No going out to play games with estimates. It's a shed, what features do you want. Send me a pic of your ideas. I can work something up for you Sir.

Home Shows are for the big guys.

Your shed building business
by: John

Hi Doug,

I am very interested in how you market your shed building business. What works for you the best and what made you decide to get into this business.

I built sheds for Heartland for about 4 years and I enjoyed it but was dead tired at the end of the day.

Do you think the recession will hurt you in '09. Do you set up at any homeshows?

Good luck to you Doug and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

No problems with leaving your e-mail address. I have just changed the format so that it doesn't get picked up by 'spam bots'. These crawl the web looking for e-mail addresses and before you know it you will have an avalanche of unsolicited e-mail.
